How long until Gunnedah Charger operational again?

I saw on Plugshare that the Gunnedah charger was reported as not working on 6th December, but it still shown in the NRMA app as not working today, almost 2 weeks later. The NRMA app suggests checking the status of nearby chargers... the nearest public charger is at Tamworth, 85km away.

Can anyone at NRMA advise when it might be operational again?

I called in to the charger yesterday (on my bicycle) to discover a red locked symbol on it, and no other apparent signs of life, so it is still broken. Fortunately I'd made plans to charge the van to 100% at home so home-Gunnedah-home was doable without the need to charge.

However, later in the day I did get a message from another Plugshare user who wasn't aware the charger was broken, and they were stranded there. I could only suggest a slow AC charge at a motel which has a charger.

Broken for over 2 weeks and still not fixed is not really acceptable, as the closest fast charger is nearly an hour's drive away, and not necessarily in the direction someone might want to be going.

NRMA, why is it taking so long? If it was a petrol station it would be fixed within a day.

@NRMA_Paul @NRMA_Jeff are you checking this forum these days?

I noted on 28th Dec that there were 6 operational chargers at the back of Olivers at Gunnedah, but the 3 NRMA units out front were non operational. All 6 stations had Teslas at them and a queue of at least 10 cars was lined up at 1pm. Glad I have a motorbike with petrol engine. Do the math based on the time it takes to fill a car with petrol vs charging to 80%. If we all had Teslas then every service station currently in Australia would need to have around 40-50 chargers. Great idea but a big gap between aspiration and reality. I felt so sorry for those Tesla drivers but it was their choice.

No you didn't, there is no Olivers at Gunnedah, and there certainly aren't 9 chargers there.

Trolling for the fossil fuel industry?

I spoke to NRMA EV help this morning, they have no word on when it might be fixed. Same for the currently broken Armidale charger. Looks like Tamworth has the only DC chargers for 100-200 km in any direction!

@GordonED7 of course you are right. It was Gundagai. Apologies. But the observations are accurate. I have no agenda either way. I like the flexibility of PHEV vehicles but as a person who does a lot of long distance travel I don’t see a role for pure EV’s

I'm glad you cleared that up! :)

We do a fair bit of long distance travelling, and it certainly requires plenty of planning, since DC charging stations away from the coast are rather sparse.

It does get a bit tricky when numerous chargers are broken though, NRMA Gunnedah is still out after more than 5 weeks, and now with NRMA Armidale also broken (just a day after being out for a day for maintenance), the space between chargers could definitely cause issues for some.

An EV driver in Gunnedah who was unable to charge at home could be well up the creek without a paddle if they were not able to find a friendly motel owner or helpful friend for overnight slow AC charging.

When they are all working, having to wait to connect doesn't happen too often in my experience, and for the few times it has happened, it's usually only a few minutes.

However, the roll-out of new chargers is definitely progressing much more slowly than what is required. Plugshare has been showing lots of "Coming Soon" chargers that have been like that for many months, some of them apparently the recipients of NSW government funding that meant they should have been completed last November.

Overall the progress of fast charger installations is definitely unsatisfactory, as is the time taken to repair broken chargers

(NRMA, are you listening???)
